About
The University of the West Indies (UWI) was founded in 1948 in Mona, Jamaica, as the University College of the West Indies. Its establishment was based on a recommendation by the Asquith Commission to review the state of higher education in the then-British colonies. In 1962, 14 years after the Mona campus opened, the college received independent university status, in the same year that Jamaica received independence from Great Britain. UWI Open Campus was opened in 2008. It was the culmination of previous iterations of UWI extra-mural and distance-learning institutions. At UWI, as a core value, a social, academic, and administrative culture that supports and promotes gender equality and justice within its environments is actively created and sustained. Moreover, our faculty, staff, and student body foster a culture and work/study environment that welcomes different ideas and perspectives and acknowledges and values diversity. Thus, our community is inclusive of and affirms the dignity of all persons regardless of race, socio-economic status, age, sex, gender identity and expression, physical and mental ability, sexual orientation, family or marital status, national origin, language, political or religious persuasion, and health status.
